RAISING BOYS WHILE BUILDING EMPIRES: WHAT MY SONS LEARN WATCHING ME WORK
Aug 06, 2025
Last week I wrote about what my kids have taught me about business. And then it got me thinking about the flip side of that coin– How does being a woman in business impact the way I’m raising my son (and bonus sons).
There’s a quiet revolution happening in homes like mine.
It doesn’t come with hashtags or Hallmark quotes.
It looks like early-morning Zoom calls and late-night nerf wars.
It sounds like, “Hold on bud, I’m finishing a client call,” followed by, “Tell me everything about recess.”
It feels like guilt and pride holding hands.
I’m a woman building a business and raising boys. And that intersection? It’s not just about juggling two roles—it’s about reprogramming generations of belief systems in real time.
When my son watches me run a meeting, make decisions, navigate hard conversations, and own my voice, he’s watching a woman model power without apology.
When he sees me cry after a tough day or admit I don’t have it all figured out, he’s learning that vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s leadership.
When I say, “This weekend is just for us,” and put my phone down, he learns that presence is power too.
And when I say, “Mama works because she loves to solve problems and help people,” he hears that women’s work isn’t a burden—it’s a gift.
But let’s be honest:
It’s not always inspiring.
Sometimes it’s messy.
Sometimes I miss things.
Sometimes the mom guilt roars louder than any executive victory.
But here’s the truth: My sons are not being raised by a woman trying to do it all perfectly.
They’re being raised by a woman doing hard things on purpose.
And in a world still catching up to the idea that strength can look like softness, that ambition and motherhood can coexist, and that women don’t owe anyone smallness—
That matters.
My boys won’t just respect women in leadership.
They’ll expect it.
They won’t be threatened by capable women.
They’ll be raised by one.
And maybe that’s the legacy I’m building, even more than the business.
